How the Spider Came To Be

Long, long ago, when the Earth was new, there lived in a certain village a woman who was a very skilled weaver. Her weaving became known throughout the village and the other village people came to her to have her weave their baskets, blankets and wall-hangings. And so it was that she became proud and began to imagine herself the finest weaver in the village.

As time passed, her reputation as a fine weaver began to extend beyond her village, and people from ot… Continue

The Story of Little Wolf

By Lelana Buckwalter

July 8, 2006

Many, many years ago, there was a young woman named Little Wolf. She was a member of the Munsee people in what is now Pennsylvania. She had her eye on a boy from a neighboring village and hoped that someday he would ask her father to marry her.

One evening, her father came to her and said, “Little Wolf, a young man, named Tall Tree, of the Unilachtigo people has come to ask you to marry him. I have given him my permission and the… Continue

Legend Of Wolf Boy
A Kiowa Legend

There was a camp of Kiowa. There were a young man, his wife, and his
brother. They set out by themselves to look for game. This young man
would leave his younger brother and his wife in camp and go out to
look for game. Every time his brother would leave, the boy would go
to a high hill nearby and sit there all day until his brother
returned.

One time before the boy went as usual to the hill, his
sister-in-law said, "Why are you so lonesome?" Let us be
sweet… Continue

The Pretty Maiden - Lenni Lenape

There was once a young woman who was very pretty. All the young men greatly admired her and wished her for their wife, but the young woman spurned all their advances and would have no suitor.
Seeing this, the animals, Tamakwa (Beaver), Shikak (Skunk), and Kukhus (Owl), held council about the pretty maiden. They said to each other, "I sure would like to have this woman for my wife."
Owl said, "If we try really hard, one of us will surely have this woman for a w… Continue

HOW BIG-FOOT GOT HIS NAME (Lakota) (Told by John Blunt-horn.)

In the moon, when the leaves fall, in the year when many stars fell, a war party of twenty men went on the warpath against the Pawnee. A small orphan boy wanted to go with them, but as he was only nine years old, they refused him at first. He begged them so to go that they finally consented, and he went with them. They were all armed with bows and arrows except two men who had guns they had traded for with the Hudson Bay Fur Company… Continue

As for references on Lenape stories, there are a few books out but if you are a Lenape Story Teller then I would suggest speaking to whom ever "taught" you.

Salutation to the Dawn

Look to this day!
For it is life, the very life of life,
In its brief course
Lie all the verities and realities of your existence:

The bliss of growth,
The glory of action,
The splendor of beauty,
For yesterday is but a dream
And tomorrow only a vision,
But today well lived makes every yesterday
a dream of happiness
And every tomorrow a vision of hope.

Look well, therefore, to this day!
Such is the salutation of the dawn.

Kalidasa (2500 BC Sanskrit)

Blessings ~

“This is my wish for you:
Comfort on difficult days,
smiles when sadness intrudes,
rainbows to follow the clouds,
laughter to kiss your lips,
sunsets to warm your heart,
hugs when spirits sag,
beauty for your eyes to see,
friendships to brighten your being,
faith so that you can believe,
confidence for when you doubt,
courage to know yourself,
patience to accept the truth,
Love to complete your life.”

Have a blessed week ~

Hello Lanie,

I was in the Kitchen Witchery group and I seen you were in Lancaster county. I am in York County right outside of York. I am actually going to be in Ephrata on Sunday for a bowling tournament that my son is in. Small world. I hope you have a wonderful day.

THE CAT AND THE MOON

THE cat went here and there
And the moon spun round like a top,
And the nearest kin of the moon,
The creeping cat, looked up.
Black Minnaloushe stared at the moon,
For, wander and wail as he would,
The pure cold light in the sky
Troubled his animal blood.
Minnaloushe runs in the grass
Lifting his delicate feet.

Do you dance, Minnaloushe, do you dance?
When two close kindred meet.
What better than call a dance?
Maybe the moon may learn,
Tired of that courtly fashion,
A new dance turn.
Minnaloushe creeps through the grass
From moonlit place to place,
The sacred moon overhead

Has taken a new phase.
Does Minnaloushe know that his pupils
Will pass from change to change,
And that from round to crescent,
From crescent to round they range?
Minnaloushe creeps through the grass
Alone, important and wise,
And lifts to the changing moon
His changing eyes.
